EP 14: What It’s Like To Be You

Conversations about Race with Patrice Hutchins

Episode 14 is a message for white people: As a white woman myself, there’s a lot I don’t understand and never will understand about being a black person in this country. In light of current circumstances stemming from George Floyd’s murder and years of racial oppression, I thought it’d be wise and necessary to dive into discussions about race with someone who can speak firsthand of what their life is like as a black individual in this country.

In this special episode, we hear from Patrice Hutchins; a transparent, black woman who’s full of patience. Patrice is a social worker for the Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, WI and is very passionate about her work.

Patrice will share her story; what it’s like to be her and what it’s like to be black in this country. In the latter half of this episode, she answers questions from her own perspective that a lot of white people have right now: What can I do to support the black community? What’s the right thing to say? What’s the wrong thing to say? How do I educate my children? How do I educate myself?

I need to say that I felt quite inadequate to have this conversation and was nervous to do so as race is a very sensitive subject. However, avoiding it is the worst thing I can do. While listening, keep in mind this is one persons story and one person’s perspective. I encourage you to listen with an open heart and an open mind. Allow your personal opinions to take a backseat and absorb all that she shares.

To the Black Community: I love you, I support you, I will continue educating myself and I am sorry if I have ever done anything to make you feel less than the incredible people you are. I see you and you matter to me.
