EP 23: How a Brain Hemorrhage Changed the Life of a 20 Year Old Athlete… Forever; with Trenton Boland

Episode 23 is a story of hope, perseverance, and strength. It’s the story of Trenton Boland. When I met Trenton about four years ago, we connected on many levels. His thirst for life & adventure coupled with his positive spirit left an imprint on my heart. Not only did he have desire – he had determination. I quickly realized Trenton was not your average 18 year old.

Fast forward. Two years ago today, 20 year-old Trenton was pursuing a degree in architecture, playing baseball and planning out his next worldly adventure. A year prior to this he had just returned from an 18 day solo trip to Thailand and his aspirations for the future were grand.

Unbeknownst to Trenton, he had been living with an AVM (arteriovenous malformation) which according to Mayo Clinic is, “an abnormal tangle of blood vessels connecting arteries and veins, which disrupts normal blood flow and oxygen circulation”.

Trenton referred to it as a ticking time bomb.

On October 27th, 2018, he had just returned home to finish his laundry before heading to his friends Halloween party when the bomb suddenly went off.

Three days later healthy, active, world-traveler Trenton woke up from a coma without the ability to walk, talk, write, read, move, eat, or drink.

It’s now been almost two years since his injury and Trenton is ready to share his story. Due to the severity of the brain hemorrhage, Trenton is still working to regain his full speech so you’ll hear me jump in to help clarify or summarize a few points.

Trenton: Your positivity and silver-lining outlook is awe inspiring. You open up and share the difficulties you’ve experienced and what your current biggest obstacle is. It is my hope and my prayer that despite this incredible bump in your road, you’ll fully pursue and accomplish your dreams and will be a name remembered by many. A name that invokes hope, determination, and gratitude for life’s most precious moments. Thank you for sharing your story.
