EP 19: From Eating Disorder to Nutrition Ally, How Jessie Bauer’s Struggles with Self Image Fueled her Life’s Work, Part 1
In Episode 19, we hear from spunky, sassy, passionate Jessie Bauer. Her spirit and laugh are ones you don’t forget. Her love of animals, her soon-to-be husband Ryan, simple living, and quirkiness are just some of the things I admire about her. Another thing I love and respect about Jessie, who I know best as Jess, is that she holds no space for popular fad diets and is best known for debunking said diets. Quite simply, she doesn’t put up with bullsh*t and has no problem calling you out on yours. Speaking of no bullsh*t, she is who she is, swear words and all (just one more lovable quirk).
This sassiness may come from being the oldest of three daughters or from fighting her inner voice that told her she wasn’t enough. Skinny enough, pretty enough, or cool enough from the age of 13 until she left for college. As soon as she hit her teens, Jessie’s struggle with self love and body image lead to her being a 70lb, 5’4″ thirteen year old.

Friends saying, “I’m skinnier than you today… your thighs are so much bigger than mine… I’m eating less than you are…” helped to fueled her struggle. Thoughts such as, ‘maybe if I do 200 sit-ups a night and eat only 4 crackers with some tuna tomorrow like the Cosmopolitan magazine suggests, I’ll fit in better.’ constantly ran through her mind.
Unfortunately, trying to fit in when you were born to stand out never works.
Thankfully, her mom and dad weren’t about to let their daughter’s lack of self-worth ruin her life. Their intervention included a frightening documentary about anorexia, a tough, tearful conversation with her “man of little words” father, and a meeting with a dietician. Although the first two interventions worked the best, it was the ridiculous meeting with the certified “dietician” that fueled her fire to become a nutritionist.

Well… a “Nutrition Ally”. Or as her friends call her “A Renegade Nutritionist: Debunking all Contemporary Diet Fads”. She is now a nutritionist who is the founder of Good Farma “Where Nature is Nurture; helping you reclaim your health, the health of the planet, through sustainable eats and actions.”
In this episode, she walks us down the path to overcoming her eating disorder and what lead her to change. Soon we’ll release Part 2 of this episode which takes a confrontational dive into fad diets, all things organic, and how someone who knows very little about nutrition can easily navigate the beginnings of a healthy lifestyle.
To Jessie: Thank you for constantly tapping into your soul and following the path it’s meant to pursue, for showing me it’s ok to leave home and plant your roots elsewhere, and for inspiring me to live more simply and soulfully. I respect the sh*t out of you (had to throw in a swear word in your honor) and am excited to be part of your journey. Love you lady!
